Mixed martial arts
MMA

MMA combines three areas that in other combat sports exist separately: striking on the feet, taking the fight to the floor and fighting on the mat. The difficulty is not in any one of them on its own, but in moving smoothly between them.
So we break them down into parts. First you learn to move, then to strike, then to defend a takedown. Linking them comes once each element works on its own.
We run the training with sporting development in mind. Some people stay with condition and technique, others go further and compete. We prepare for competition step by step, and the decision to join the competitive group rests with the coach.
- Age range
- 15 and over in the beginner and advanced groups
- Who teaches it
- Times
- Check the schedule
- Next stage
- Intermediate group
Who it is for
- Adults with no previous contact with combat sports
- People training one discipline who are missing the other ranges
- People returning to regular training after a break
- Fighters preparing to compete, after arranging it with the coach
What we work on
- Striking on the feet: stance, movement, distance and reaction
- Takedowns and defending against being taken down
- Work against the cage, meaning clinch situations in a confined space
- Control and positions on the ground
- Transitions between ranges, from the feet to the ground and back
- Joint locks and chokes, in a range matched to the group's level
What you can learn
- To hold distance and read what the other person is doing
- To defend a takedown and to take someone down yourself
- To escape bad positions instead of waiting for the fight to resolve itself
- To link techniques into sequences, gradually and without shortcuts
How to start
Start with the beginner group. Call before your first visit to confirm the time and the right group, because the plan changes during the season.
What to bring
- Comfortable sports clothing, ideally a rashguard or a close fitting sports shirt
- Shorts with no zips, rivets or hard parts
- A water bottle
- Flip flops for moving around off the mat
- A towel, optional
For your first sessions the Academy can lend you basic gloves. This is not a standing arrangement for the whole time you train, so do not plan around it long term.
Anyone training regularly should buy their own equipment in time. It is a matter of hygiene, comfort and a fit that borrowed equipment will not give you.
